Women like high heels.  But men? Well, men ? A study has found that women’s heels influence male behavior in a number of ways. Of course, we all know that guys find their ladies more attractive in a pair of high-rises, but research now suggests that the shoe style also does a better job of helping women get what they want from men. Curious? Find out more below.

The appeal of high heels. To no one’s surprise, a study in the journal Archives of S*xual Behavior suggests that men really do find women in high heels significantly s*xier. Shocking, right? Cue a collective yawn from women everywhere.

The appeal of high heels. The department of social behavior at the University of Bretagne conducted three experiments using French women identically dressed in black suits with pencil skirts and white blouses.

The appeal of high heels. Another important facto about the experiments: Most of the women were brunettes, as previous research has shown that men are more likely to approach blonde women over their darker-haired counterparts. Seemingly, the only differences between the female participants were their shoes.

The appeal of high heels. In the series of experiments, study author Nicholas Guéguen and his colleagues asked the women to wear there different types of shoes (with different heel heights) and then approach strangers to ask for help.

The appeal of high heels. First, the ladies — wearing either black flats with no heel, black shoes with a 2-inch heel, or black pumps with a 3.5-inch heel — approved a number of strangers, asking them for assistance. The woman switched into another pairs of shoes after soliciting every 10 people.

The appeal of high heels. So, what’d the researchers find? About 83 percent of men offered help to women wearing heels, in comparison to only 47 percent who helped when ladies were wearing flats.

The appeal of high heels. What’s more, if a woman sat alone at a bar, it took men 7.49 minutes to approach her if she was sporting heels. But if she was donning some comfy flats? Well, it took twice as long.

The appeal of high heels. “The results showed that high heels were associated with greater s*xiness, overall physical attractiveness, breast attractiveness, beauty, attractiveness to other men, and willingness for a date,” Guéguen said in the report.

The appeal of high heels. In another experiment, the women dropped a glove on the street and noted whether or not men retrieved it for them. What happened this time? When the women dropped a glove, a whopping 93 percent of men chase after them to return it if the women wore heels, while only 63 percent of guys played the gentleman when the women wore flats.

The appeal of high heels. What exactly draws men to high heels? Guéguen offered a simple explanation: stilettos simply make women more attractive to men. Common sense, right? The Huffington Post points out that Guéguen “proved” his hypothesis in a “follow-up study, as yet unpublished, in which men shown the body profiles of women in flats or heels tended to think the heel-wearing women were more attractive.”

The appeal of high heels. Previous studies have shown that high heels can change a woman’s gait (making her hips sway a bit more) and posture to make her appear more feminine. And what does appearing feminine signal? Reproduction, of course.

The appeal of high heels. According to Guéguen, the media can also be credited for the strong imagery association between high heels and s*xiness. As the Huffington Post points out, exposure to such media images may also shape men’s preferences.

The appeal of high heels. “The over-association of high heels with women’s s*xiness and s*xual content could lead men to misinterpret the s*xual intent of women with high heels,” Guéguen wrote in a paper describing the study.

The appeal of high heels. Altogether, the study’s findings aren’t that surprising. The idea that high heels have a stranger power over men isn’t revolutionary, to say the least.

The appeal of high heels. It is, however, an incredibly useful nugget of knowledge to have next time you either want a guy to hit on you or need some manly help. Ladies, 1; Men, 0.
